Education, Training, & Professional Development

I hold a Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University, where I developed a strong foundation in psychological theory and therapeutic practice. I also have a Bachelor’s degree in Community and Criminal Justice, which has deepened my understanding of social systems and the broader factors that impact individual and community well-being.

My professional background includes work in the healthcare sector, with a focus on supporting children in care within foster home settings. These experiences have strengthened my empathy and reinforced my commitment to helping families navigate complex and often challenging circumstances.

I strive to take a holistic, family-systems-informed approach to therapy, drawing on my knowledge of community resources to support clients in meaningful and practical ways. My goal is to empower individuals and families by fostering resilience and promoting long-term mental wellness.

I am deeply committed to ongoing learning and have pursued extensive professional development across various areas of mental health. Some of the training and workshops I’ve completed include:

  • Mental Health First Aid training

  • Child-Friendly CBT for Anxiety in Children and Teens.

  • Understanding and Treating Anxious Children Using Play Therapy.

  • Art Therapy in a Play Therapy Setting

  • Treating Disruptive Behaviour Problems in a Play Therapy Setting

Personal Interests

Outside of my professional work, I find peace and joy in the outdoors. Whether it's hiking, kayaking, camping, or simply exploring nature, I love being active and connected to the world around me—often with my beloved dog, Lotus, by my side.
Family is also a big part of my life. As a proud and involved aunt, I treasure the time I spend with my nieces and nephews, and I find deep meaning in building lasting memories and traditions with those closest to me.
Sports have long been a passion of mine, especially softball, which I played competitively for over 12 years. That experience shaped my appreciation for teamwork, perseverance, and balance—values I carry into all areas of my life.
In the quieter moments, I enjoy winding down with a warm cup of tea and watching a favourite TV series (which changes often!).

Therapeutic Style and Approach

At Mindful Minds Psychotherapy, we believe therapy should be a collaborative process between you and your therapist. We strive to create a comfortable and supportive environment where you can feel safe to share your experiences.

Our therapeutic style is client-centred, meaning we focus on your unique needs and goals. We use a strengths-based approach to identify and build upon your strengths to help you achieve your desired outcomes. In all areas of therapy, Tyla encourages curiosity to explore her client's unique needs and perspectives, promoting a deeper understanding of their individual experiences and ensuring that every person feels valued and supported.

Tyla specializes in caregiver and co-parenting strategies that enhance communication, understanding, and collaboration.

She employs attachment-based therapy, an approach aimed at improving the emotional bonds between children and their caregivers. Attachment-based therapy focuses on understanding and addressing attachment issues that can arise from various experiences to help families develop healthier relationships by fostering open communication and emotional awareness. Through various techniques, including play therapy and family sessions, attachment-based therapy creates a supportive environment where children and parents can explore their feelings and strengthen their connection.

Play Therapy Style and Approach

Tyla utilizes play therapy approaches when working with children, in both non-directive and directive styles.

Non-directive play therapy is a therapeutic approach that allows children to express themselves freely through play. In this style, the therapist creates a safe and supportive environment where children can explore their thoughts and feelings without judgment. The therapist observes and reflects on the child's play, helping them to process emotions and experiences at their own pace. This method fosters creativity and self-discovery, empowering children to communicate in a way that feels natural to them.

Directive play therapy is a therapeutic approach that guides children in expressing their thoughts and feelings through play. In this style, the therapist plays an active role, offering structure and guidance to children to explore their feelings and experiences. By using specific techniques and interventions, the therapist encourages children to engage in purposeful play, promoting healing and personal development. This approach assists children in gaining a clearer understanding of their experiences and supports their development of effective coping strategies to navigate future challenges.
